Yes, it’s time to write about one of the D’s most visible clubs, Mar a Lago.
The website can be found here: https://www.maralagoclub.com.
The address is: 1100 South Ocean Boulevard, Palm Beach, Florida 33480
As noted on the website: Five minutes from The Mar-a-Lago Club sits the spectacular Trump International Golf Club, West Palm Beach. The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences awarded Trump International with the prestigious Five-Star Diamond Award, rating it the best golf course in Florida. This incredible golf course, designed by world-renowned architect, Jim Fazio, boasts 27 of the most magnificent golf holes anywhere and a clubhouse that has no rival in the state of Florida.
I am not sure if these comments are true, as part of the problem with Trump is his narcissistic personality, dubious ethics and propensity to be economical with the truth. Rick Reilly has just published a terrific tale about the guy in a golfing context:
The book has many illustrations of just what an ass hole Trump is on the golf course, and infers that this spills over into his public life as well. Trump is a member at WFGC, but he has never been at the Club for some time. I have talked with several members who have played with him, and uniformly they would concur with Reilly’s assessment of the guy. Some will never ever play with the guy again, appalled at his cheating and lack of respect of the game.
The stories in the book remind me of another great man: Kim Jong Il who in 1994 shot 38 under, including 11 holes-in-one, at the 7,700-yard championship course at Pyongyang in the very first golf round of his life, according to North Korean state media. So it must also be true.
Its too bad, as some of the courses D’s associated with really are marvelous: for example, as a member of the Trumpster’s International Club, you get to enjoy reciprocity at the following Trump Golf properties:
Mar a Lago looks classically Trump - overstuffed, gaudy, baubbly, and brash:
Mar a Lago is in a gorgeous location, but one that faces some challenges as a result of climate change. Trump is an ardent denier, and here’s one illustration of the place under the dire scenario of a 10 foot rise on sea levels by 2100:
Of course, the timing on this won’t matter to him. At the time of writing, scientists have begun to step up the evidence that in fact climate change is a real and very serious threat to mankind, and our window to fix things is closing rapidly. Here’s his record on this since becoming President:
pulled the US out of the Paris international climate agreement
taken steps to cut back the US Environmental Protection Agency and made some awful appointments there and generally
and is on record saying that global warming is a hoax invented by the Chinese to attack US manufacturing.
Presidential and yet still time for golf…
He’s been playing a lot since he was elected President. Since taking office on Jan. 20, 2017, Mr. Trump has reportedly been on the grounds of his golf courses or played golf elsewhere 178 times since becoming President (as of March 31, 2019).
Sorry, I cannot abide the guy. Lots of folks say they agree with that, but they like other things he’s doing. I find this hard to identify: trade? health? education? infrastructure? Bombastic foreign relations - yes! I think his administration is filled with a bunch of nasty people who have collectively dragged the US into a mess and lowered the tone of discourse about real issues. The other slight problem is I cannot see the other side in much better shape.
The 2020 Election looks a shoo-in for Trumpster.
