My good friend and fellow Winged Foot member Ben H invited me to play at his closer-to-home course in Bedford, New York. What a nice piece of property, set in some gorgeous countryside in one of the most attractive areas in the State. No surprise so many celebs live in this part of the world.
This a link to the Club’s website: https://www.bgtclub.org. Not much information about the Club for non-Members, but this is from the website:
“… the Bedford Club was founded, first as a tennis club and in 1896, with the creation of nine holes on newly acquired land, it became a golf course as well. In the twenties, more land was added from adjacent properties and the well-known golf course architect Devereux Emmet was engaged to redesign the original nine holes and build an additional nine to complete the course. Emmet’s course, completed in 1928, was 6,400 yards of narrow, tree-lined fairways to small greens that provided a challenge to even the best golfers. Golf course architect Ken Dye was invited to work with a small committee to renovate the course. Black tees were added, fairway bunkers built, a new par five put into place and other holes lengthened to extend the course to 6,660 yards”
The Club has a new Clubhouse, superbly designed and decorated. Whoever led that project did a masterful job.
The golf course is both fun and quite challenging. We played off the Blue tees, around 6400 yards, featuring narrowish fairways and small greens that are heavily bunkered. I guess that’s why there is a slope of 140.
The day we played was cold and a bit grey, but these pictures give a sense of the layout challenges.
I really enjoyed the course. It’s set in some lovely countryside and offers a very nice challenge off the various teeing areas. Most fairways are set to favor a fade as trees await you if you pull your tee shot. The small greens were in excellent condition and would present a real test in harder, drier conditions.
