Hi.

Welcome to my blog.

Fairview

I was invited to play here by my dear golfing buddy Peter M in October 2021. The event was a second round of the Westchester Seniors Golf Association Championship  Individual Stroke Play. It didn't really matter we had not played in the first round, it was just fun to play another new course in this area where there are so many truly great courses.

It was a very Scottish day, with rain and mist, so I should have felt right at home. I thought the course was an absolutely fantastic example of the Donald Ross courses in the area. Trent Jones re-designed it. Tree lined fairways, some water on the front 9 and loads of big bunkers around the greens. The greens were superb, and we were in some ways fortunate to play them when they were so slow as the borrows on some could mean holding the ball on the green a challenge.

The Club is described as a “golfers paradise” on its website. That might be a bit steep, but it was really neat to play there; I did not score very well on the back 9 which was our first 9 as we started on 10, but did manage to play one over for the first 9, missing a birdie on 9 for level par. Also, the tournament was played off the white forward tees, so played really short.

Here’s a link to the Club’s website: https://www.fairviewcountryclub.org

This is a little of the history from the website: Fairview Country Club was founded in 1904 on land leased from the Fairview Links in Bronxville, the nine-hole course that also spawned Siwanoy. The lease ended after the 1907 season, and the club moved to a farm in Elmsford. Within a few years, the land was needed by New York City for an aqueduct, and the club moved 500 yards across the road. A huge English Tudor mansion with a spectacular view across the Saw Mill River Valley became Fairview’s clubhouse.

The new 18-hole golf course, designed by Donald Ross, opened in 1912. It served until 1968, when, as a result of the commercialization of the Elmsford area and the development of Interstate 287, the club moved to its present site in Greenwich where Robert Trent Jones designed a new course.

Here’s some pics I took during the round: you see how misty it was.

Very enjoyable experience. Seems like a considerable portion of the staff and caddies are from South Africa, and our caddie, Tristan, was very good indeed.
