Royal Burgess is the oldest golf club in the world, and is located not far from the airport in Scotland’s capital city of Edinburgh. I played here in July 2021, a guest of Roy L. The weather was outstanding and the golf course even better. A really nicely laid out parkland course with probably the fastest greens I had played in the past several weeks, they were in really excellent condition.

The Royal Burgess Golfing Society can trace it’s origins back to 1735, and golf has been played in its current location since 1891. Willie Park jar designed the course which formally opened in 1895. It was decreed “Royal” in 1929. This is from the club’s website:
The Royal Burgess course at Barnton is a real pleasure to play for golfers of all abilities. Situated in beautiful parkland, it is hard to imagine you are so close to the heart of Edinburgh. With fairways lined by trees, including some fine specimen varieties, the cleverly bunkered course will challenge and reward in equal measure. Accurate driving and a deft putting stroke on our exceptional greens are prerequisites for scoring well.
The course at The Royal Burgess has long been recognised as worthy of hosting championship golf and has a proud history of hosting both professional and amateur events.
We played the red tees, which are rated at 72 and 126; a pretty good challenge with reasonable fairways and lots of very soft fine sand bunkers which I seem to be able to find very easily.
The Clubhouse has been modernised but kept its traditional exterior, and has some very nice formal and informal dining and bar areas. A nice pro-shop too.
A real pleasure to play this historic golf course, and one that I would definately add to your list to play when travelling to Scotland.
